Please note that Tony has now retired and all course materials have been passed to RCR Ltd who intend to continue running the courses.

The 2012/13 dates will be published here when we get them.

Getting equipped for the course.

You will probably get more out of the course if you bring your engine and gearbox manuals AND some photos of your engine and surrounding area. These will allow the tutor to illustrate various points by reference to your own boat.

Boat & Engine Maintenance Courses

Who is the course for? Anyone who owns/crews a boat, who is thinking about buying one, or who is just interested. It is helpful if you know how to change a car's engine oil, but by no means essential. After the course you should feel more confident when dealing with the "experts"
How long is the course? 12 hours over 2 days at a weekend.
How much does it cost? From £100 per 2 day course. This depends upon the venue.

Cost of lunch is extra as are light refreshments on RCR courses.

What will I study/learn? Both weekend and evening courses cover the same topics. A list of topics is shown below split up for weekend attendance, but actual content varies to meet past criticism and student needs.
How much practical work is there? We try and limit course numbers to 12. This normally gives time for all who want to try diesel system bleeding, belt adjustment, and cable soldering. There are normally demonstrations of injector and pump testing.
What do I need to bring? Yourself. Please wear stout shoes or boots and clothes you do not mind getting a bit oily and smelly. Any boat bits you are worried about or want advice on. It is also good if you can bring your experiences to share. A past student suggested that your engine manual would also be a good idea.
What do I get for my money? The course. A 100+ page illustrated A4 book of course notes.
What equipment will I be using? You will be using the facilities available at a College. TVU have a variety of engines (3 marinised ones) and RCR supply 3 marine engines for practical work. All run (normally)

A variety of samples of marine and automotive parts are available for you to handle.

Is there anything the course will NOT cover? Paint, wood , steel, & GRP repairs, rigging and sails. We do not cover outboards or petrol engines (although the rest of the course would still be useful).
How about accommodation for Saturday night? Unfortunately we can not offer or recommend accommodation.
I belong to a club where a lot of people want the course. Can you do anything for us? We could come to you and run a course at your club if you have suitable accommodation. Ring or email and have a chat.
How often do the courses run? We need 12 students to run a course, so no course can be guaranteed to run. We offer courses between October and July each year

INTRODUCTORY  COURSE INFORMATION

This is a "new" course designed for those who are very new to boating with little experience of practical matters OR "the other half" of a boating partnership.

This is a one day course that is intended to allow you to recognise problems in their early stages and decide upon suitable action.

This course attracted very few students last year so we will only be offering it to clubs when it can be run at weekends.

Members of the public should contact RCR so we can keep a list of those interested and run a course when we get sufficient numbers.

All courses will run for one day on a Friday
